Just a Great Day A little blustery at the start for the June 28 Soling regatta, the wind settled down for some really good sailing. Fifteen skippers launched this week, a little lighter than normal but still enough to split the fleet, lowering congestion. With decent wind, we were able to complete eleven races.

Soling Master Class 3rd Place Mark Whitehead
Ken Gerber 14 retrieves his Soling after being pushed to shore by Tim Wright's Soling.
Out on the Water Headache victims were exchanged this week. On June 21, Ken Gerber sailed to the top of the Sailor Class, but only seven days later, he struggled with boat issues. Tom Barstow, on the other hand, went home with electrical problems last week but reigned supreme in the Sailor Class this Tuesday. Tom and Ken are in fierce competition to be the season’s top seadog, and so far Tom leads the way — by only a point! Just to show you how close the competition is, all top five skippers this week were separated by two points. On the podium in second place was Jim Opie, four tenths behind the leader. As of late, Bruce Brown has been in the thick of things, placing third and only six tenths behind Jim. John Barstow sailed to a fourth, followed closely by Bob Brennan. Tim Wright again took top honors in the Master Class with six wins. Always a contender, it was Don Cundy in second with two wins to brag about. Third place was held by the fleet’s struggling commodore, Mark Whitehead, with Jack Minahan nipping at his stern in fourth. Capturing fifth place was Paul McBride. From first to fifth, the separation was less than two points.
June 30 Wind Overpowers US12 Fleet The fleet found out that there can be too much of a good thing. The constant wind was strong but sailable. However, the frequent gusts that came through were too much for the ‘A’ rigs, and only two sailors brought a ‘B’ rig, more suitable for stronger winds. Even so, there were times it was hard to tack, and the sailors felt it would be too risky to have a regatta. We hope to have better sailing next Thursday on Back Bay.
It was a beautiful day, but too windy for US12 races.
John Simms 101 and Jim Opie 130 get their US12s ready to sail.
Tim Wright and Don Cundy tried out their US12 "B" Rigs, Soling 1M sails.
Sailing on Back Bay The radio-controlled model yachts are on Back Bay in Wolfeboro from 1 PM to 3 PM weekly, the Solings on Tuesday and the US12s on Thursday, weather permitting. Wednesday serves as an alternate day should sailing conditions be poor. Join the fun! We love to share so don’t be shy about asking to try your hand at the controls. Come watch the show or take a picture. It’s a sight to behold.
Join the fun!
