The Sasquatch Footy Regatta Returns
After a yearlong hiatus, the Sasquatch Footy Regatta returned for the 2021 season, and what a great return it was. A dozen skippers signed up for the twelve-race competition on June 19. Most were from New Hampshire and Massachusetts, but our national Footy secretary, Brian Mau, made the trek from Buffalo, New York, a nine-hour trip. Unfortunately, his boat did not cooperate and he was unable to compete. Now that’s a tragedy! He admitted to being a guy who saw the glass half full, however, so made the most of a beautiful day with its accompanying camaraderie.

Score Sheets
Bright sun and a good breeze made it a glorious event. Cliff Martin sailed consistently and well, scoring 20 points to take home the coveted Sasquatch trophy. On Cliff’s heels with 30 points was Herb Dreher in the second spot. Tim Wright, the 2019 champion, had boat issues in the morning session but took all six races in the afternoon and was able to place an amazing third despite his initial deficit.
The Sasquatch Regatta on Wolfeboro’s Back Bay is one in a series of Northeast Footy regattas that also includes races in Needham, Massachusetts as well as Nashua and Gilford, New Hampshire.
We would like to recognize and thank our hard-working regatta staff.

Why My Hair Is Gray
Approaching Tuesday, meteorologists predicted thunderstorms and little or no wind that afternoon in Wolfeboro. Okay, no problem, go to Plan B and sail on Wednesday with sunshine, a moderate breeze, and no chance of rain. On Tuesday we waited and waited and waited for the thunderstorms, but instead, the sun was out and we did have a breeze, the storms not rumbling through till around 4 PM, well after sailing would have finished. No problem; we had Plan B in place. Wrong-O! The sun was there along with pleasant temperatures, but the wind gusts hit the scale at over 20 mph — not easy on the boats. We hemmed and hawed while the winds settled down a bit before the fleet, or part of it, pushed off into the water. The problem was we didn’t have enough skippers for an official regatta.
Out on the Water
The boats were flying around the course so we did manage ten races, but attrition was high so at the end there were only three boats left.
We have scores thanks to Karen Enos and B. B. Wright but they’re unofficial. We just did average scores based on the number of races the skippers survived. Three Skippers survived all ten races — Tim Wright, Denis Boisvert, and Steve Leker. The rest of us did the best we could. With no throw-outs, DNSs, DNFs, or other stuff, it was Tim Wright who took the day, Mark Whitehead second, Denis Boisvert third, Steve Leker fourth, Jack Minahan fifth, Don Cundy sixth, Joel Nelson seventh, and Jay Burns eighth.
US12 Sailing
Thursday, June 17, was a perfect day. The temperature was around 80°, and the humidity was low. The wind, as usual, came from many directions, but today was a little different. At the start, the wind was as strong as Wednesday, with gusts over 20 knots, using Paul Wallace’s anemometer. Slowly but surely, the wind lessened, and by the end of the afternoon, we were drifting, looking for wind.
To be sure, there were some sailors who thought twice about putting their boats in. We decided to sail but not score, so no one felt the pressure to sail and put their boat in jeopardy. Bruce Wilhelm, one of our newer sailors, was the first to “test the waters” and the wind. After that, we had seven racers honing their skills, with very strong gusts. There were many who had good races, with most people getting in the top three. Some notables were John Simms, who knocked Tim Wright out of the top spot twice, Don Cundy with five top-three finishes, and Bruce Wilhelm with three top-threes. Jim Opie also had a couple of second-place finishes. Paul McBride and Paul Wallace each had some issues with their boats, but they both stayed around to watch the racing. It was a good day for spectators.
Thanks to B. B. Wright for scoring and Don Opie for coming to watch the sailing. It was a remarkable day under some really demanding conditions. Compliments to all who sailed and challenged themselves. Let’s do it again next week!
