Model Yachting Open House
In addition to our regular Soling regatta, Tuesday, June 21, was the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Model Yachting Open House. Sitting nearby was a museum representative, Anne Lennon, who offered information about its many programs as well as an opportunity to sign up for membership or make a donation. Visitors could take a turn at the controls of a Soling, and twelve model sailboat kits made by Commodore Mark Whitehead were distributed to the younger generation.
Duncan, Izzy, Levi, Olivia, Mica, Justice, Pearson, and their families were among the many who attended the event.

Soling Regatta
Strange winds plagued Back Bay this week, but what else is new? Onshore it might be on your back, and out on the course it could be from the west or south or nonexistent — difficult to read.
Twenty-two skippers were ready to go at the start, but sadly, three were knocked out from the git-go when Anthony Quinn, Jerry Leach, and Tom Barstow all had boat issues that kept them from the competition. The fleet managed eight races with the Master Class out first and the Sailor Class starting one minute later.
Out on the Water
It is always great to see new faces at the top of the leader board. This week it was Ken Gerber for the Sailor Class. Jay Burns made a strong showing and finished second. He was followed by Jim Opie in third, Genie Ware in fourth, and Al Stevens in fifth.
In a regatta all his own, Tim Wright, reading the winds to perfection, seemed to be way, way, way out in front for five of the eight races. Needless to say, Tim took the top spot this week. Tim Brand’s mojo guided him to second place with a win in Race 3. Dan Masessa apparently is fond of the overall third spot, which he also held last week. Steve Leker was fourth and Denis Boisvert fifth.
US12 Sailors Had Another Challenging Day
On June 23, there was no constant wind direction so picking up changes was critical. Equally important was the luck of being in the right place at the right time to take advantage of those shifts. Although there was a little rain for one race, it was a great day to sail. We managed to get in thirteen races, thanks to the prompt restarts by our race director, Don Cundy, and our scorekeeper, B. B. Wright.
Our sailors are getting more competitive, making it harder to do well consistently. Six of the racers finished a race in at least second place. The other three had best finishes of third, fourth, and fifth in a fleet of nine boats. Tim Wright led the way, with Don Cundy having his best finish of the season with a second place overall. John Simms and Paul McBride tied for third place. Anthony Quinn was next, with Bob Brennan, Jim Opie, Bruce Wilhelm, and Paul Wallace finishing in that order.
A challenging day, a quick rain, and pleasant temperatures made it a good day for all involved. We look forward to next week on Back Bay.

Sailing on Back Bay
The radio-controlled model yachts are on Back Bay in Wolfeboro from 1 PM to 3 PM weekly, the Solings on Tuesday and the US12s on Thursday, weather permitting. Wednesday serves as an alternate day should sailing conditions be poor.
Join the fun! We love to share so don’t be shy about asking to try your hand at the controls. Come watch the show or take a picture. It’s a sight to behold.
