Hot Hot Hot!

With temperatures in the nineties it was time to slow things down for the June 18 Soling regatta. At Tim Wright’s suggestion, we went with nonofficial scoring and a strong weather warning. We were very concerned about heat-related health issues. The day was more relaxed since there was no pressure to perform well and keep the seasonal position intact. Scoring was a straight average — if you sailed you scored, if not no penalty.

Scorekeepers were kept well back from the path and in the shade. Thank you, Karen and B. B., for enduring the heat for us.

Surprisingly, we had nineteen skippers, and even though the winds were light, we managed to complete eight races.

Solings Out on the Water

Our last week’s wisecrack about Dave Hogenson’s drive from Colorado to join us must have provided wind for his sails. Dave had not only his first win ever in the Sailor Class but also an additional four wins in that class to become the Sailor’s leader this week with a score of 8.9. Mark Bodenstab surprised himself this week with a strong second-place finish and a score of 10.0. Right on Mark’s transom, Linwood Davis and John Barstow tied for third, scoring 10.2. Fifth went to Genie Ware with a score of 11.6.

Two years in the making, Tim Wright’s brand new Soling was launched, but probably was tested on Ossipee Lake first. Although the yacht was new, Tim’s performance remained the same, with six wins and status as overall regatta leader thanks to a score of 1.3. Only seven tenths behind Tim was Jeff Witzel, his score of 2.0 landing him in second place. Steve Leker pulled off a 3.3 score for third, Mark Whitehead scored 4.6 for fourth, and Bob Pacini took fifth with 4.8.

June 20 US12 Sailing

The weather forecast for the US12 fleet was not good — hot, humid, and a wind of only 1 mph. People heeded the warnings and stayed away. Tim Wright showed up with the scorekeeper, B.B. Wright. Ted Monetta took a risk and drove up from Rochester, New Hampshire for the afternoon with his Soling. That was it. Two sailors sailing different boats, trading off until John Simms ambled down the path and was offered a US12 to sail. His own boat, #101, is in a state of rebuild trying to get rid of some glitches.

Those three sailed until 2:45 in as nice a breeze as we could remember. The wind was strong enough to keep the heat at bay, and with only three sailors, we all could be in the shade. It was a fabulous day, and one in which no start clock was heard. We had a rolling start with the Soling getting the upper hand each time, crossing the line first. There were no scores, as sailors enjoyed switching boats often.

Hopefully next week’s weather forecast will predict safer and more comfortable temperatures. Despite the oven, this week turned out to be a great day of sailing for the three who were there.

For a change of pace, a climber of the rock face of El Capitan in Yosemite tries his hand at model sailing.

Summer Kick-Off 2024

At the Pop Whalen Ice and Arts Center on Saturday, June 22, visitors were welcomed to the Summer Kick-Off 2024 event, sponsored by Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation. As ambassador for the Back Bay Skippers, Rick Parent displayed five of his organization-themed boats. Rick recently added a J Boat to his collection of twenty-three R/C sailboats, and is planning to restart Sunday sailing at Lily Pond in Gilford. The New Hampshire Boat Museum had a full-size sailboat on display to promote its sailing classes and boatbuilding workshops, and will open its new museum in Moultonborough in July. Kyle Blaisdell helped with the NHBM/BBS booth. Kyle recently received the first annual Rick Parent Squadron 57 scholarship for this year’s model yacht building class at the New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro. Rick Parent is always happy to loan one of his boats to anyone wanting to sail.
