Reflection
Our goal always has been to improve our sailing skills and awareness of sailing rules. We are fortunate to have some very savvy and capable skippers who are willing to share their knowledge. To that end, below are Tim Wright’s thoughts on the progress of our fleets.
“I have noticed that the level of sailing/racing competence has risen quite dramatically in the last two years. Initially, new RC sailors worry about staying out of the way of others, then they start worrying about getting around the course. Now, people are paying attention to strategies and tactics. This means those early sailing concerns are now integrated into everyone’s knowledge base, and racers are now free to look at the bigger picture. How can I get to the first mark quicker and ahead of others? Just a look at the boats all lined at the start shows how much our members have learned about the importance of getting off the line quickly. It’s getting harder to finish in the top five as there are more participants improving all the time. It has become more challenging and competitive, which is great for everyone.”
Solings in Action
The prediction was for 12-mph winds with gusts to 25 mph. Needless to say, we were a bit apprehensive at the start of the July 19 Soling regatta. It was blustery for the first few races, but the eighteen skippers handled those gusts, and the wind seemed to settle down as the afternoon progressed. The fleet went on to complete twelve races.
Out on the Water
With another strong showing, Tom Barstow’s eight wins hoisted him to the top of the Sailor Class this week. Bill Malay is working his way back into form, taking three wins and four seconds to occupy the second spot. A fast improving Bruce Brown grabbed a win in Race 12 along with four second-place finishes to land in third for the regatta. John Barstow, in an effort to keep up with brother Tom, took five thirds for a fourth-place overall finish. Our new skipper Roger Rice, in only his third regatta, finished third in Race 11 and took fifth place in the regatta. Roger was very consistent and is gaining ground quickly.
US12 Sailing on July 21
Sailing took place two hours earlier than usual due to a severe storm predicted for the middle of the afternoon. As a result, there were only six boats racing because some people didn’t get the word in time about the 11 o’clock start. They missed yet another day of swirling winds, gusts, and dead spots, which made the sailing as challenging as ever. The storm did come, but after everyone had a chance to get home and batten down their hatches.
