First Win
On July 12 in Race 10, John Barstow sailed to his first victory. To help celebrate the occasion, a commemorative belt buckle donated by Anthony Quinn was presented to John.
Our Glass Is Half Full
Although the season is half over, we are still adhering to “Rule #1” — HAVE FUN! So far, the season has been spectacular as we enjoy wonderful sailing days on Back Bay and meet new friends behind the controls as well as in the audience. With the season continuing into the fall, there are many more days of good sailing ahead.
This week’s Soling regatta on August 2 brought out twenty skippers for the completion of nine races. Because of a change in the usual wind direction that day, our race director, Don Cundy, called for a three-legged course, sailing from the starting line and continuing to the inner mark then the outer mark, just the opposite of our normal course. Due to the on-and-off wind, it was a great course call.
This week, we welcomed Bob Little and Bruce Wilhelm from the building class of 2022. We hope classmates Andy Snowdon, Tom Cookson, and Ken Goodwin will be able to join us sometime soon. Back from a two-year hiatus was John Russell. He had a little work to do on his boat before he could sail with us this year, but he finally readied old Number 11 for action, even sailing to a win in Race 8.
Out on the Water
It’s good to see some new faces among the top five in the Sailor Class. Tom Barstow seems to have a tight grip on first place, winning again this week. Anthony Quinn charged to second place with a very consistent regatta of two seconds and four thirds. Only one point behind for third was Bob Brennan with a win in Race 4. Bruce Brown remained in the mix and earned fourth place this week. Al Stevens finished first in Race 1 and placed fifth overall.
The US12 Sailors
For the first time in four weeks, there were no thunderstorms on Thursday, August 4. However, the heat and humidity gave us different problems. When our twelfth race had been completed a little early, everyone was in favor of calling it a day.
The wind in Back Bay never ceases to amaze the sailors with its inconsistencies and variations, and it was really on again, off again on the 4th. The challenges, which are mentioned weekly, were even more so this week. It was hard to pick the right end of the line for our starts, with no one dominating the scoring through the first six races. After taking a break to give some of the spectators a chance to try out the boats, the wind found its voice and became a bit more predictable.
