NH Boat Museum to Open Saturday, May 27

Saturday, May 27 is Opening Day at the New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM), which has a busy calendar of events and programs scheduled for 2023, highlighted by cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee. This year, these vintage boat narrated tours are available on the Millie B. and Miss Lauren, each providing different experiences.

“The Miss Lauren leaves from Paugus Bay out of North Water Marine, while the Millie B leaves from the Town Docks in Wolfeboro,” said NHBM Executive Director Martha Cummings. “On these tours, our captains provide insight into the lake – its history and geology – and stories about some of the interesting people who live on the lake.”

In addition to these cruises, NHBM offers a variety of programs that range from Boat Building and Community Sailing to Lake Discover Family Days, Children’s Story Hour, and more.

Other highlights include NHBM’s monthly Arts Series in which local art is featured in the museum’s gallery. On Friday, June 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m, NHBM will host a members-only artist reception for watercolor painter Cate Pool.

Visitors to NHBM will also have the chance to experience the exhibit, “Letting Off Steam: Escaping to New Hampshire during the Golden Age of Steam.” Returning from last year, the exhibit displays a Fitzhenry Steam Engine from the historic Iona steamboat, which is on loan from the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham, MA.

“The exhibit highlights how steam engines and steamboats changed New Hampshire,” said Cummings. “The exhibit also celebrates the 150th anniversary of the M/S Mount Washington on Lake Winnipesaukee and the railroad’s arrival in Wolfeboro.”

Later in the summer, NHBM will also host the Alton Bay Boat Show on Saturday, August 12 and Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta on Friday, September 15 and Saturday, September 16.

Founded in 1992 by antique and classic boating enthusiasts, NHBM is open from Saturday, May 27 on Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend in October. NHBM is open Thursday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. After Sunday, June 18, the museum will be open Tuesday – Saturday and Sundays at the same times.
