On Friday, June 3, the New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM) hosted a reception for local artist Marilyn Bodwell, whose work will be featured in the museum’s gallery throughout the month of June. A resident of Mirror Lake, Bodwell has painted in oils for sixty years. “My subjects are varied with many of my commissions of homes and cottages in the Lakes Region,” she explained. “I also do seascapes, landscapes, florals and still lifes.”
Regarding her connection to boating, Bodwell said she and her husband, Charlie, left Detroit, Michigan by boat, sailing their 40’ cutter to Cape Cod in 1981. Moving briefly to Skidaway Island, GA where she became a member of The Landings Art Association, Bodwell said they missed New England. “In 1990, we moved to Mirror Lake and built a home here,” she said. “I am still a boat enthusiast, but I only have two kayaks now.”
As a former TWA Flight attendant, a private pilot and a sailor, Bodwell’s travels serve as inspiration for many of her paintings, and her work can be seen by appointment at her home studio. Bodwell’s work is available for viewing with paid admission to NHBM, which is open Thursday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. After June 19, the museum will be open six days a week, Tuesday – Saturday and Sundays same times.
