A Glorious Day

To start July, the twenty-one Soling skippers who launched for the Tuesday regatta were christened with sunshine and reasonable temperatures. The wind was a bit light and fickle, but that’s not unusual for Back Bay.

The agenda for July 2 began with the presentation of a certificate to Dave Hogenson for his first win two weeks ago. May you see many more victories, Dave!

The fleet then completed ten races, displaying close competition in every race. Starts were especially tough because of the wind’s velocity and shifts, many sailors caught well off the starting line at the bell.

Dave Hogenson received a first-win certificate.

The seven-boat Sailor Class was led by Linwood Davis this week using a borrowed boat. Linwood sailed seven races, scoring four firsts and three seconds and ending with a tally of 1.33. Dave Hogenson had two first-place and four second-place finishes for the second rung on the ladder with a score of 2.22. The competition was very tight as demonstrated by the tie between Bruce Wilhelm and Clint Wolcott, both with two wins and a final score of 3.11. One second and a couple of thirds helped raise John Cavanagh to fifth place and a score of 4.11.

Leader of the Master Class was Tim Wright, thanks to seven wins and a final score of 1.12. Two seconds, two thirds, and two fourths earned a score of 4.00 for Don Cundy and second place overall. Tom Barstow had a good day, placing third with his score of 4.50 that included a second and a third. Jeff Witzel, Steve Leker, and Ted Monetta shared fourth place, all three scoring 5.78.

A Little Switcheroo

Because the July 4th holiday came on our usual Thursday sailing day, the US12 fleet decided to sail on the 3rd instead. Six racers came, and a good time was had by all. The wind was deceptive in an on-again off-again way, and didn’t seem strong enough for many sprints to the finish line. However, the fleet managed to complete a dozen races – and twenty minutes early! People commented on the inconsistencies of the wind and then surmised that somehow it kept the racing close. Changes in the order of boats kept happening all the way through the final leg, with many “miracle” finishes and heartbreaking collapses that made every race exciting, competitive, and worth watching until the very end.

Scoring was tight, and there were some new faces in the winner’s circle. Anthony Quinn sailed to a first-place finish in the last race, and walked away with the longest active winning streak of one. Bruce Wilhelm also finished first in a race, and completed the day with a first, a second and two thirds. John Simms also had a first-place finish. The top finisher was Tim Wright with nine firsts, two seconds, a fourth, and a final score of 1.10. This week, Rick Laird drove up from Boston to take second place. He finished second six times and third twice for a 2.60 score. Just to make things interesting, Anthony Quinn had one first, two seconds, and three thirds, leading to his score of 3.00. Right behind was John Simms in fourth place, who finished with one first, one second, five thirds, and a score of 3.10. Bruce Wilhelm finished in fifth place with a 3.80 score. Jim Opie arrived a little late, missing four races, but worked his way into the competition. His last four races were an improvement over his first four races, and he finished with a score of 5.43. Jim, as well as the rest of us, enjoyed a wonderful day of sailing and racing on Back Bay. The fleet was remarkably reliable since no rescues were necessary. There were many spectators who also enjoyed watching a race or two. We look forward to sailing next week.

Model Yachting Class

The 2024 model yacht building class is less than two weeks away.

Bright and early on Tuesday morning of June 25, seven Skippers gathered at the New Hampshire Boat Museum to raise the work tent. All the bits and pieces are in place and we are ready for a full class of eight students.

A very big thank-you to Al Stevens, Steve Leker, Ted Monetta, Mark Bodenstab, Linwood Davis, Dave Corbett, and Mark Whitehead for their assistance with tent setup.

Reprieve from the Heat

It was still warm but nothing like last week, and Skippers gathered in force for the June 25 Soling regatta. Twenty-three launched under bright skies and a good breeze of 9 to 10 mph. Despite a few delays with rescues here and there, the fleet managed to complete ten races. Bob Strodel launched his glasses along with his boat, initiating a long swim while raking the depths and sending soil into swirls that hindered visibility until his wife, Debbie, arrived with goggles and snorkel. Bob now seems to be in the lead for the Sunken Ship Award! Don Cundy dropped his mast, the commodore tangled with Ted Monetta, and Tom Barstow rowed out to rescue his unresponsive yacht and picked up two other troubled Solings while at it, dropping an oar in the process.

On a high note, we surprised Dave Corbett with a certificate for his first win three weeks ago.

In the skippers meeting, Race Director Al Posnack describes the course.

Solings on the Water

John Barstow sailed to the top this week, taking the Sailor Class with six wins and three seconds, earning a score of 1.33. Genie Ware chased John all day, had a win in Race #7 plus three second-place finishes for second place overall and a score of 2.62. In third with a score of 2.67 was Linwood Davis finishing first in two races and second in one. Fourth place went to Jim Opie with a score of 3.0, and fifth was a tie with Mark Bodenstab and Clint Wolcott scoring 4.33.

It doesn’t matter what he sails — it could be a brick – but Tim Wright always seems to land – or water — at the head of the fleet. His new boat had a winch arm issue so it was his faithful old boat that he sailed to seven wins and a score of 1.78. Don Cundy has been struggling with his boat recently but always is in the thick of things. This week, he scored three thirds for second place and a final tally of 4.50. Denis Boisvert rose dramatically from his last week’s performance with a second and a third and a third-place score of 5.00. Despite two first-place finishes, Ted Monetta’s final score was 5.33 for fourth place. Not far behind in fifth was Al Posnack, whose two second-place finishes helped tally a score of 5.67.

Eight US12 Sailors

The US12 fleet was treated to one of the best sailing days of the summer. Not only was the breeze fairly steady with some shifts and the afternoon sunny and warm but also the racing was lively, with many sailors having multiple finishes in the top three. We were able to complete fourteen races due to the wonderful winds and the quick pace set by our scorekeeper, B. B. Wright. There was a prolonged delay when four boats rafted together and sailed down Back Bay. Perhaps what made the day so special was that in addition to all of the attributes mentioned above, we never had to use the rescue boat. Our flotilla came apart by itself and we continued sailing.

Next week, we’ll be sailing US12s on Wednesday, July 3, to avoid Wolfeboro on the holiday. Whether or not the weather can match June 27, we hope to see you there.

US12s on the Water

The sailing was close, except for Tim Wright. He won all but one race, one of his throw-outs a first-place finish! His final tally was 1.00. The battle for second was much closer. John Simms had a first and four second-place finishes, coming in second with a score of 3.20. Don Cundy with two seconds and four thirds was right behind at 3.33 in third. Rick Laird traveled up from Boston and sailed to three seconds and three thirds, finishing right behind Don in fourth place at 3.50. Rick Gates, with three seconds and two thirds, finished in fifth place with a 4.00. Jim Opie, with three thirds in a row, came in sixth, averaging 4.50. In seventh, Rick Parent joined us, and for the first time in years, he sailed all afternoon. Rick averaged 5.70, but the score was meaningless to him, although he did sail to second place in one race. He merely was enjoying an afternoon off, sailing with friends. We were happy to sail with him.

Hot Hot Hot!

With temperatures in the nineties it was time to slow things down for the June 18 Soling regatta. At Tim Wright’s suggestion, we went with nonofficial scoring and a strong weather warning. We were very concerned about heat-related health issues. The day was more relaxed since there was no pressure to perform well and keep the seasonal position intact. Scoring was a straight average — if you sailed you scored, if not no penalty.

Scorekeepers were kept well back from the path and in the shade. Thank you, Karen and B. B., for enduring the heat for us.

Surprisingly, we had nineteen skippers, and even though the winds were light, we managed to complete eight races.

Solings Out on the Water

Our last week’s wisecrack about Dave Hogenson’s drive from Colorado to join us must have provided wind for his sails. Dave had not only his first win ever in the Sailor Class but also an additional four wins in that class to become the Sailor’s leader this week with a score of 8.9. Mark Bodenstab surprised himself this week with a strong second-place finish and a score of 10.0. Right on Mark’s transom, Linwood Davis and John Barstow tied for third, scoring 10.2. Fifth went to Genie Ware with a score of 11.6.

Two years in the making, Tim Wright’s brand new Soling was launched, but probably was tested on Ossipee Lake first. Although the yacht was new, Tim’s performance remained the same, with six wins and status as overall regatta leader thanks to a score of 1.3. Only seven tenths behind Tim was Jeff Witzel, his score of 2.0 landing him in second place. Steve Leker pulled off a 3.3 score for third, Mark Whitehead scored 4.6 for fourth, and Bob Pacini took fifth with 4.8.

June 20 US12 Sailing

The weather forecast for the US12 fleet was not good — hot, humid, and a wind of only 1 mph. People heeded the warnings and stayed away. Tim Wright showed up with the scorekeeper, B.B. Wright. Ted Monetta took a risk and drove up from Rochester, New Hampshire for the afternoon with his Soling. That was it. Two sailors sailing different boats, trading off until John Simms ambled down the path and was offered a US12 to sail. His own boat, #101, is in a state of rebuild trying to get rid of some glitches.

Those three sailed until 2:45 in as nice a breeze as we could remember. The wind was strong enough to keep the heat at bay, and with only three sailors, we all could be in the shade. It was a fabulous day, and one in which no start clock was heard. We had a rolling start with the Soling getting the upper hand each time, crossing the line first. There were no scores, as sailors enjoyed switching boats often.

Hopefully next week’s weather forecast will predict safer and more comfortable temperatures. Despite the oven, this week turned out to be a great day of sailing for the three who were there.

Summer Kick-Off 2024

At the Pop Whalen Ice and Arts Center on Saturday, June 22, visitors were welcomed to the Summer Kick-Off 2024 event, sponsored by Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation. As ambassador for the Back Bay Skippers, Rick Parent displayed five of his organization-themed boats. Rick recently added a J Boat to his collection of twenty-three R/C sailboats, and is planning to restart Sunday sailing at Lily Pond in Gilford. The New Hampshire Boat Museum had a full-size sailboat on display to promote its sailing classes and boatbuilding workshops, and will open its new museum in Moultonborough in July. Kyle Blaisdell helped with the NHBM/BBS booth. Kyle recently received the first annual Rick Parent Squadron 57 scholarship for this year’s model yacht building class at the New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro. Rick Parent is always happy to loan one of his boats to anyone wanting to sail.
