Scenes from the July 2 Sailing Program Rick Parent presented a special sailing program as part of the American Legion’s Fourth of July celebration. Assisting him were Jerome Holden, Paul McBride, and Jerry Leach.
Rick Parent brought five of his boats to the event: 3 Solings, a US12, and a Santa Barbara.
Some of the boats have sail and hull designs using organization themes.

A Little of This, a Little of That

To describe the Soling regatta of July 5 takes only two words — constant change. There was little to no wind, a bluster now and then, a few sprinkles here and there, and even a shower of rain. The sailing remained intense through it all.

Twenty-one Skippers gathered on the shore of Back Bay for ten races. Two new faces appeared on the scene ready to face the action. Bob Little launched the loaner boat, and Roger Rice, who purchased Bill Quayle’s Soling, jumped fearlessly into the fray.

Out on the Water

Struggling with electrical problems lately, Anthony Quinn apparently solved at least some of them to take four wins and top of the podium this week for the Sailor Class. Perhaps he should buy a bilge pump to keep those electrical flareups at bay.

Bill Malay finally corrected what problems he’d been having to earn two wins and a strong second-place regatta finish. Right behind him, Tom Barstow took one win and a third-place finish. Jim Opie also had a win and finished in the fourth spot, followed by the ever-improving Bruce Brown, who finished second in two races and fifth overall.

Tim Brand of the Master Class sure likes the day’s first race. For a second time, he led at the start and held it for the finish. It was Tim Wright who topped the leader board, however, with an impressive eight wins. With one win and three second-place finishes, Commodore Mark Whitehead was giddy with excitement as he celebrated second place in this week’s regatta. Denis Boisvert placed second in Race 2 and Race 7 to secure third overall, and Don Cundy had a second in Race 3 for a fourth-place showing. Rounding out the top five in the Master Class was Jack Minahan, who chased Tim Brand around the course in Race 1 for a second place and landed in the regatta’s fifth spot. In between races, Don Cundy captained the rescue boat to help fellow skippers get back to shore — just the kind of guy he is — always ready to help others. Thank you, Don!

US12 Sailing on July 7

An interesting mix with good though shifting winds, hot temperatures, and a wonderful day to be outside.
We managed to complete twelve races and saw close racing and places changing right up to the finish line. There were a number of missed buoys, dead spots, and other unfortunate circumstances, but the sailors rose to the occasion. Don Cundy, showing great athletic form, ran after a woman who left her keys on the bench. It’s probable that her two young children distracted her, but Don leaped to the rescue and ran down the path to return them. We assumed he regularly ran marathons until he came back and told us that was the farthest he’d run in five years! We still were impressed.

On the course, Tim Wright won the day with nine firsts. Don Cundy came in second with a consistent outing that included two firsts and three second-place finishes. In a tie for third, John Simms and Paul McBride each made multiple finishes in the top three. Anthony Quinn edged out Jim Opie for fifth place by two tenths of a point, saving his best for last with a triumphant win in Race 12. Jim had three third-place finishes. Bruce Wilhelm sailed to seventh place but continued to show his determination to learn and improve, having a fourth-place finish in Race 6. Paul Wallace was battling an elusive electrical gremlin that made steering difficult. Although he sat out five races trying to track down the problem, he still managed a fifth place in Race 8. Not bad for a boat with a mind of its own.

The sailing is getting more competitive, and scores are harder to come by. The racers’ starts keep getting better and better, and the last boat across the line is not that far behind the first boat across. The sailing is in close quarters, and tactics are starting to make more of an impact. The sailors are in mid-season form, and we anticipate even closer competition for the rest of the season. Thanks to our race director, Don Cundy, and our scorekeeper, B. B. Wright, for all they do to make the racing move along and happen seamlessly. See you next week down at Back Bay!
