Recognition

Because of a glitch in the Soling spring series ending date, we have made an adjustment in the awards. Our race director, Don Cundy, earned second place in the spring series for the Soling Master Class as well as third place in the US12 Class. Don, being one of our top skippers, is always among the leaders out on Back Bay’s waters.

As race director, Don sets the course, calls the starts, and, in general, keeps us on track out on the course. In addition, he seems to have assumed weekly care of the dinghy. We sincerely appreciate his dedication, as several photos will show.

Commodore Mark Whitehead sailed to third place in the Master Class for the spring series.

The CanAm Challenge Regatta

The Stowe Model Yacht Club was able to revive its friendly Soling competition between the U.S. and Canada after a three-year COVID hiatus.

Tim Wright and Mark Whitehead from Back Bay Skippers drove to Stowe, Vermont to participate in the event held August 5-6. Twenty-one of the top skippers from both countries challenged Stowe’s infamous spotty winds at the sailing pond behind Commodores Inn. Both Tim and Mark – mostly Tim — were able to contribute to the U.S. team’s victory over our northern neighbor.

The top skippers were AMYA Region 1 Director Don Ouimette, Team USA, first; Jim Goddard, Team Canada, second; Bruce Nourjian, Stowe Model Yacht Club, Team USA, third; and Back Bay Skipper Tim Wright, Team USA, fourth. Mark Whitehead placed a respectable sixteenth, finishing in the top five for five races with one second and one third. Tim could brag about three first-place finishes, four seconds, and four thirds.

Solings

Rain on Tuesday and very strong winds on Wednesday canceled any chance for a regatta this week. The commodore’s wife always thinks it ironic that a sailboat race has to be canceled due to wind!

US12 Sailing

The winds for the US12s on Thursday lived up to Back Bay’s usual August variety. While we did have wind, we never knew where it was coming from. On one start, two boats were almost touching on parallel courses, close-hauled on different tacks for what seemed a long time. How is that even possible? It was some competitive racing as no lead was ever safe. Boats went flying past others as if they were standing still. Sometimes the gambles on where the wind would pick up paid off, and sometimes they really didn’t. Competitive racing, close finishes, and friendly vibes fill our Thursdays. B. B. Wright did another fine job of scoring, and resisted bribes from some of the sailors. Her integrity can’t be bought! We appreciate her willingness to come every Thursday and keep us moving in the right direction.

Out on the Water for the US12s

Tim Wright fought off many challengers throughout, and managed to win ten of the twelve races. He ended with a score of 1.0. Al Posnack joined the fleet with a borrowed boat and sailed to second place with a score of 2.5. He had the two other wins, three seconds, and three thirds. John Simms cruised to third place with a score of 3.2. He had five second-place finishes and two thirds. Don Cundy finished in fourth with a score of 4.3 and three third-place finishes. At 4.5, Don McBride had two seconds and a third, finishing in fifth place overall. Paul McBride had two thirds and finished in sixth place with a score of 4.6. Jim Opie, with one second-place finish, was right behind in seventh at 4.7. The last four finishers were only four tenths of a point apart. We hope for more good racing next week.

Spring Series

We have two series of competition each season — spring and summer. The spring series ran from May 30 to July 20, and the Soling awards were presented at the August 1 regatta. For the Sailor Class, third place was awarded to Jim Opie, second place to Steve Towne, and top honors to Anthony Quinn. Due to an ending-date adjustment, awards for second and third place in the Master Class will be given out next week to build suspense. The spring series winner for that class was never in doubt, however, with top honors going to Tim Wright.

Wi-i-i-i-ndy Day!

In stark contrast to last week, the August 1 Soling regatta had blustery winds of ten to fifteen mph, not what was predicted. A few members of the 2023 building class arrived ready to sail but decided not to launch into the water’s chop. Hopefully, conditions will calm down next week so Dave Corbett, Dave Slock, John Cavanagh, and Frank Argersinger will give it a try. Linwood Davis and Mark Bodenstab, also from the 2023 class, are old hands now and jumped right into the fray.

The twenty-three skippers in attendance managed to complete ten races despite the occasional appearance of organized chaos. When the wind blasts hit, the skippers had to be ready to trim their sails and keep boats on the straight and narrow. A few developed mechanical issues, but the survivors thoroughly enjoyed the day’s challenge.

A Beautiful Day for Solings

US12 Sailing

The weather and the wind on August 3rd left us scratching our heads. As the day got cloudier, the wind became more erratic and directionally challenged. Wind shifts came frequently, often surrounded by lulls or dead spots. The seven sailors were tested from the start and had to stay on their toes. No lead was ever safe, it seemed, and a puff could push a trailing boat ahead at any time. Many close finishes were recorded by B.B. Wright, who does a solid job getting our results down on paper. We finished thirteen races, with two people offering Jeff Witzel, a Soling sailor, a chance to try his hand at US12s.

The wind made things interesting and everyone felt they did well in some races and not so much in others. There is always next week. Let’s hope for another good day of sailing.

Out on the Water

It looks like Ted Monetta will wear the top-dog target next week due to his one win and five seconds in this week’s Soling Class. Just over three tenths behind in second place was Ken Gerber, taking time off from house renovation to win four races and cruise to one second-place finish. After a slow start, Jeff Witzel posted two wins and a second to take the third spot. Anthony Quinn placed fourth but unfortunately didn’t complete enough races to qualify for the season score. The true fourth place went to Clint Wolcott, followed by Bruce Brown in fifth.

The Master Class winner was Tim Wright, tuning up for this weekend’s CAN-AM challenge in Stowe, Vermont with eight victories. Tom Barstow’s one win and two seconds steered him into the second spot overall. The remaining top five places were filled by Rick Gates, Al Posnack, and Mark Whitehead – Rick and Al in an epic battle that tied them for third, Mark holding on for fifth.

Soling Masters are off to a good start.
Solings round the Third Mark.

On the course, for the US12s, Tim Wright was the winner in eight of the twelve races he sailed in, opening the door for others to finish in the top spot. Everyone who sailed had at least four finishes in the top three. John Simms and Don Cundy finished five hundredths apart in second and third. John had two wins, three seconds, and two thirds. Don had only eight scored races, yet he had a win, two seconds, and four thirds. In fourth place, Bob Brennan had a win, two seconds, and a third. In fifth was Paul McBride who, at times, sacrificed his position to take action pictures during the races. Paul had a win, two seconds, and a third. Bruce Wilhelm finished just behind in sixth, with a second and four third-place finishes. The difference between second place and sixth place was only 1.3 points. Don McBride wasn’t feeling the magic, and raced his boat in only two races, not enough to get an official score, but he stuck it out as a spectator. He was heard saying that R/C sailing is a great spectator sport, and more fun than racing.

Not Great Wind

The sun was out along with  twenty-two skippers for the Soling regatta on July 25. The wind, however, wasn’t close to the six to seven mph predicted. The fleets completed only six races, which ties for the season’s low.

Denis Boisvert was presented a shirt for his third-place finish in the Master Class for the 2022 season.
Ted Monetta 237
There were a few belated awards given at the regatta. Denis Boisvert finally received his third-place award shirt for the 2022 season. Given first-win awards for their recent accomplishments were Ted Monetta, Jeff Witzel, and Linwood Davis, Lin taking his first win in his very first regatta race.

Sailing with us for the first time was Mark Bodenstab after building his new Soling two weeks ago during the workshop. Not quite ready for the water but coming to just observe were fellow classmates Curran Owens and Kathleen DeCamp. Perhaps they will launch with us next week.

Mark Whitehead, having sailed TOO well last week, was this week's target.
Without a decent wind, the commodore, who wore a target on his back from his unheard of regatta win last week, returned to being a goat – but not the good kind. Ah well, glory can be fleeting.

US12 Regatta Held Wednesday, July 26

Because of the impending weather on Thursday, rescheduling was necessary. Perhaps due to appointments or the late notice, only four boats sailed the twelve races. Despite the fickle wind, there were some moments when the boats were really moving, and then there were the more common July winds, light and variable. Spirited racing in the hot humid weather was key for the day.

Despite the small number of sailors and the energy-sapping heat, the skippers had a good day. B. B. Wright scored for us and used her shaded chair to keep cool under the sun. One of these weeks we will have a great day with cool breezes, consistent winds, and sunny skies, but it wasn’t this week. Still, we had fun in the sun.

Out on the Water

A new regatta winner in the Soling Sailor Class was crowned this week. Genie Ware took top honors, thanks to her three wins and a score of 1.4. Congratulations to Genie for outstanding sailing! Jeff Witzel and Ted Monetta have been fighting tooth and nail all season, but this week, it was Ted Monetta in his new boat who placed second scoring 3.0, and Jeff’s score of 3.8 taking third. John Barstow is beginning to get his sea legs and captured fourth overall with a score of 4.0, followed closely by Bruce Brown in fifth with 4.2.

Tim Wright scored four wins to take top honers in the Soling Master Class. Two wins and a second-place finish led Don Cundy to second overall, and he was followed by Tom Barstow in third with a second and two thirds. Not sailing for a couple of weeks, Denis Boisvert pulled off a strong fourth, leading Al Posnack, who was only two tenths behind.

Tim Wright was tough to catch, winning eleven of the twelve US12 races, but the competition between the other three boats was quite close. Don McBride finished in second place, with the other win and four second places. Paul McBride finished in third, with four second places. Jim Opie was right behind and had three seconds. In the last race, Jim was having his best race, leading while going to the first downwind mark when his rudder servo gave out and his boat just kept going. Had he finished that race, the places would have been different. It’s always something.
