September Already? Where Did the Summer Go?

It seems like we just got started, and now calendars have been flipped to September! Unbelievable!

The weathermen have no idea how to predict Back Bay wind. Tuesday, August 30, was another one of those days of now you see it, now you don’t. Whoops! The wind is over there, but I’m over here! Bummer!

However, despite playing hide-and-seek with the wind, Back Bay Skippers always adhere to RULE #1 — “Have Fun”! The twenty skippers in Tuesday’s regatta certainly were tested about following that rule. A mixture of good humor and frustration provided the day’s theme for all ten races.

The johnboat has been retired.

The Johnboat Is Gone

Our faithful rescue boat was retired this week and taken to a local recycling plant. It had sustained damage from rocks lurking in low water levels and wasn’t worth repairing. We thank Al Stevens for providing the boat and helping with its deliverance to a new life.

Out on the Water

Because this is a super-busy weekend for Wes, no scores for the Sailor Class are available yet. The results will be posted as soon as possible.

The Master Class fleet of eight skippers was led by Tim Wright, winning seven of the ten races. Tim is a master at reading those frustrating winds. While the remaining sails are flat, Tim’s are full — a mystery the rest of us would like to solve!

Scoring five fourths, two seconds, and a first, Denis Boisvert showed the consistency needed to place second for the day. Don Cundy, less than two tenths behind Denis, grabbed third place. Tim Brand sailed seven races, his fourth-place finish overall a result of one second, one third, and two fourths. Less than three tenths behind Mr. Brand, Paul McBride placed fifth overall with four third-place finishes. Jack Minahan was right behind Paul in sixth place overall, having two first-place finishes under his belt. Joel Nelson and Mark Whitehead duked it out for last place, Joel emerging the winner with Mark’s two second-place finishes guiding him into seventh overall. It should be mentioned that less than two points separated the second- and seventh-place finishers.

US12 Skippers Had a Lot to Think About September 1

We thought about whether the blustery winds would abate, we thought about who might risk putting their boat in, and we thought about whether we’d race at all. Two weeks ago, we were faced with the same dilemma, but the afternoon turned out very well. This week, however, we had four sailors launch their boats and sail a practice race to assess the viability of racing with such strong and gusty winds. We noted knockdowns, a distinct inability to tack in the gusts, and boats on the rocks. All that helped the sailors reach a conclusion: SAILING WAS OFF! We will try again next week.

One thing worth mentioning is the help some people are giving at the end of each session to clean things up. John Simms is one of several who always finds ways to help with the cleanup. This week, John “took one for the team” when he retrieved the inner starting buoy. He slipped and fell on the grass and stones above the large rocks. Luckily, he wasn’t badly hurt, but it’s worth reminding people to be careful when working or walking along the edge of the bay.

“Thank you,” John – and others who help us at the end of our sailing adventures!

There were no US12 races today.

Sailing on Back Bay
The radio-controlled model yachts are on Back Bay in Wolfeboro from 1 PM to 3 PM weekly, the Solings on Tuesday and the US12s on Thursday, weather permitting. Wednesday serves as an alternate day should sailing conditions be poor.

Join the fun! We love to share so don’t be shy about asking to try your hand at the controls. Come watch the show or take a picture. It’s a sight to behold.
