Model Yacht Club to Host Open House in July

On Saturday, July 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Back Bay Skippers Model Yacht Club will host an Open House at Bridges Falls Path in Wolfeboro.

At the Open House, the Back Bay Skippers will demonstrate various model yachts and explain techniques for sailing them. “Folks will also have the opportunity to sail one of the yachts,” noted Program Manager Anne Lennon. “It’s a fun event for people of all ages.”

The Back Bay Skippers also teach Model Yacht Building Workshops, although this year’s offerings are already sold out. “It’s a wonderful experience where participants learn how to construct a model sailboat in a friendly, stress-free, and fun environment,” said Lennon. “They tend to sell out early, so there is always next year.”

Regarding the history of model yachting, it dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it was often associated with leisure activities in parks and on private estates. “Early enthusiasts handcrafted their boats, with clubs beginning to form as early as the 1890s,” said NHBM Executive Director Devon Kurtz. “Model yachting is still popular today, which is why we offer this open house, which is free and open to everyone.”

NHBM’s Model Yacht Open House takes place on Saturday, July 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Bridge Falls Path adjacent to Foss Field in downtown Wolfeboro. Click here to learn more about model yachting.
