Paul McBride’s take on The June 27 US12 Regatta
Seven sailors enjoyed Thursday’s leisurely US12 Regatta under a sunny sky, with temperatures in the 80s and light variable winds. It was a welcome change from Wednesday’s hectic Soling Regatta where 19 boats competed. Seven boats were at the start line for the first race: 6 US12s and 1 Soling. The winds were strong enough for us to use the full course for all of the ten races. While there were some lulls, they were not so bad as the dead calm that can be very frustrating
Bill Hagerup, Race Director, won five races; Tom Greig three races, and Don Cundy two races. Unfortunately Jim Opie’s boat developed rudder servo problems in the fourth race, and he was unable to sail in any of the remaining races. It did provide an opportunity for Tom Greig, Bill Hagerup, and Don Cundy to hone their boat rescue skills using their boats to nudge Jim’s disabled boat back to the dock.
Special thanks to our scorekeeper today, Ellen Koehler, who took over the duties of the regular US12 scorekeepers who are on vacation. By the tenth race we were all getting hot and tired from all the walking in the hot sun. But, all in all, it was a great day of sailing.
Note: Tom Greig told us it was OK to include him in the scoring. Wonderful, it’s been years in the making!
Out On The Water
The name of the game was staying out of trouble and consistency. A strong showing by Don McBride overtook season leader Denis Boisvert to take this weeks Sailor Class regatta with eight race wins. Denis Boisvert took the second spot with two wins followed by John Russell in the third spot with one race win.
The Master Class leader this week was Rick Lalley with three class wins and very consistent score through the whole regatta. Tim Wright hung in for second place with four wins but a couple of races knocked him out of the top spot. Our venerable Howard Germon, from across the border, pulled four wins to take the third spot.
