“Ice-Out” is when the ice that has covered the lake all winter melts enough so that the M/S Mount Washington cruise ship can navigate between its landing ports in Wolfeboro, Alton Bay, Weirs Beach, Meredith and Center Harbor. The date of this event has been recorded for over 130 years. The exact date and time is now determined by an observer in a small plane that flies over the lake daily. When the pilot radios in the Ice-Out call it is considered official!
Ice-Out on Lake Winnipesaukee is cause for celebration because it traditionally marks the start of the spring season in the lakes region. Boats start going back into the water, islanders regain water access to their cottages, snow bird friends return from lower latitudes, and thoughts of warm summer days are on the minds of cold, cabin fever ridden residents. Take part in the welcoming of spring at our annual Ice-Out Celebration, an evening of fantastic fun, friends and food!
This event features hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, and a buffet dinner catered by O Bistro. The night also provides the opportunity to bid on and win an array of tastefully selected live & silent auction items. Items from previous years include, unique boating experiences, lake activities, hotel stays, sporting/special event tickets, gift baskets, gift certificates and more!
This year will also feature a 50/50 “squares” game to guess the official Ice-Out date of Lake Winnipesaukee.
All proceeds benefit the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s mission of preserving, exhibiting, and educating about the history of boating and life on New Hampshire’s lakes.
