Hard at Work
The instruction team is hard at work getting ready for this year’s building class.
US12s Regatta
On June 12 we had six boats racing but never more than five in any race. The day was very pleasant, and the wind gave sailors something to think about with all the shifts and gusts. In the end, Tim Wright edged out Bill Hagerup for first place for the day.
Bill seems to have solved his battery issues by returning to AA battery packs for the time being. Jim Opie started with five consecutive fourth-place finishes then was either second or third for the rest of the twelve races. Paul McBride, sailing his first US12 regatta (with his B-rig Soling sails no less), and John McClun each sailed six races and finished with tie scores. Unfortunately, they didn’t sail enough races to qualify for the day but still had fun. Paul Wallace did well and finished in fourth place.
Someone recently said they really liked the feeling of the group of sailors at Back Bay. There was little of the contention they’ve seen elsewhere. It was a nice comment to hear. It is also the reason I like the group. There’s plenty of competition but also camaraderie. People help those who need it and find ways to explain the rules or give helpful hints. The more we all improve, the better the racing gets.
WOW! A Day with No Rain!
Spring Tuesdays sure have been wet — or much too windy — but the June 18 Soling regatta was rain-free with a moderate wind and even seventy-degree temperatures. No sun, but that’s okay. Sixteen boats launched for our ten-race third scored regatta. New skipper Nelson Steiner got a chance to run with our loaner boat while he waits for the building class to start next month.
Who has the right of way?
From the Master Class, Anthony Quinn shook up the field with a win in the first race. After that it was the Rick Lalley – Tim Wright show, with Rick winning three races and Tim taking six. Over all, the Master Class was led by Tim Wright with Rick Lalley second, and Don Cundy in third.
Winners for the Sailor Class were Denis Boisvert with two victories, Diane LaBella with four, Paul McBride with three, and Paul Wallace with one. For the day, Denis Boisvert ended up on top with Paul McBride and Diane LaBella tied for second, and Paul Wallace in third.
