Owner:  Gerry Davidson, Gilford, NH

Driver: Brad Davidson

Roman CandleThis is a 1961 Colcock designed and built 266 class F hydroplane. It was built to conform with the new class specifications requiring a length of at least 18 feet long. Lou Nuta owned the boat until the early 1990s when it was eventually passed through to Jeff Magnuson of Lyman, ME in 1993. Jeff restored part of the hydro and put it into storage until 2007.  It still has its original hull and the current owner finished the restoration, restored the cowls and had the engine rebuilt by Leo Croisetiere of R&L Engines in 2009. It is 18’2″ long and powered by a Chevy 400 HP 8 cylinder 302 cu. in. engine. Roman Candle was raced constantly from 1962 to 1970. It won the Gold Coast Marathon in 1966 at a record speed of 81 mph for 124 miles. The boat raced primarily east of the Mississippi River in such places as New Orleans, LA, Columbus and Cincinnati, OH, Raleigh, NC, Red Bank, NJ and all over Florida. The boat has been raced by many drivers including Lou Nuta, Jr. of Miami, for whom the boat was built, and Milner Irvin, Sherm Polhamus and others.
