New Exhibits on Display for Boating Enthusiasts & History Lovers
May 13, 2009 - Wolfeboro, NH

The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro opens for the season on Saturday, May 23rd with new exhibits on display. “By constantly changing displays, there is always a reason to return to the Museum and gain some new insights into the history of boating on the lakes and rivers of New Hampshire,” stated NHBM Chair Hank Why.

As guests enter the museum, “The Lady of the Lake” ship model will catch your eye. The exhibit includes a replica of the famous steamer built by David Warren of Melvin Village who spent 3,000 hours meticulously researching and building this model that plied the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee from 1848 to 1895. Information on its interesting history is included in the display; guests can learn more on Thursday, August 27 when Warren will be the speaker in this year's free lecture series.

Visitors will find an interesting display on the history of the Hickman Sea Sled that features the Museum's 1925 13' Sea Sled, completely restored by Zeke Bly of Wolfeboro, thanks to funding from the Captain Thombs Fund. Manufactured by the Sea Sled Corporation of West Mystic, CT, the “inverted V” design was the forerunner of the popular Boston Whaler. The motor's 1928 Elto Twin “Speedster” is on loan from Mark Denison.

Next on your museum tour, guests will view a 15' SunRay sailboat “Day Off.” Built in 1938 and sailed by its original owner until 1998, this boat has a very interesting history on the waters of Lake Massabesic. Acquired from the Manchester Historic Association, Museum volunteers have worked to cosmetically restore her for display.

Other new exhibits include the 1951 Chris Craft Sportsman “Kaitlyn-Anne” which is the same model boat as the “Thayer IV” of “On Golden Pond” movie fame, donated by Warren and Meredith Kundert, a 1961 Lyman on loan from Frank Norton, and a Vintage Race Boat exhibit in honor of this year's 6th Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta that takes place September 18 and 19. These new exhibits complement a vast array of antique and classic wooden boats, sail boats, canoes, memorabilia, trophies and historical images on display.

Guests are invited to enjoy a self-guided tour and staff is available to answer questions. Be sure to visit the Museum Gift Shop which offers a wide variety of boat and lake-themed items, as well as a terrific selection of boating books.

The New Hampshire Boat Museum will be open Mon.-Sat. 10am-4pm, Sun. 12-4pm. It is located at 397 Center Street (Route 28/109), Wolfeboro Falls, 2 miles northeast of downtown Wolfeboro, housed in the historic Allen A Resort's original dance hall.
