Hampshire Boat Museum Presents The Lady of the Lake The First Successful Steamboat on Lake Winnipesaukee & Its Impact on Local History, Economy & Development August 14, 2009 - Wolfeboro, NH The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro is pleased to welcome David Warren of Melvin Village on Thursday, August 27 for a free presentation at 7pm entitled The Lady of the Lake. The talk will follow the fascinating history of The Lady, from her launch at Lake Village (Lakeport) in 1849 to her final rest on the bottom of Glendale Bay in 1895. Some of the exciting resorts she served will be discussed, including Diamond Island, Ossipee Mountain Park and Lakeshore Park, as well as the remarkable relationship between The Lady and the Mount Washington. Steam power ushered in an industrial revolution that dramatically changed the lives of people living in the area in the latter half of the 19th century. The railroads and their steamboats began a new era of travel and adventure that is taken for granted today. The Lady of the Lake was there and was the first successful steamboat on Winnipiseogee Pond. Wolfeborough, more than any other town, came to depend on The Lady. This was her home port and, in later years, her winter quarters. She was the Town's principal connection to the outside world until the railroad finally arrived in 1872. Wolfeborough boomed, and grand hotels like the Pavilion sprang up almost overnight. Because of The Lady, Wolfeborough became the resort town it remains today . David Warren, historical sleuth, avid ship modeler and local resident, spent 3,000 hours researching The Lady and building a beautiful 51 model of this famous steamboat, presently on display at NHBM's exhibit hall. Guests are welcome to enjoy refreshments after the presentation and view the exhibits on display. This is the last program of the 2009 Lecture Series. Mr. Warren is also a dedicated volunteer for the museum and has been instrumental in the creation of the recently introduced children's activities. To make young visitors' tour of the museum fun and educational, games are now available that include Chris Craft Crossword Puzzle, Who Made That? and AdventureQuest. Several have two levels, one easy and one challenging, to be attractive for a variety of ages. Other new activities include an electric board for Nautical Terms and a practice board for Nautical Knots. The Museum is open through Columbus Day Weekend, Monday through Saturday 10am-4pm, and Sunday 12-4pm. Housed in the historic Allen A Resort's original dance hall, the Museum is located at 397 Center Street (Route 28 North), Wolfeboro Falls, two miles north of downtown Wolfeboro.
