Boat Museum Presents: Ice Yachting in the Lakes Region
New Hampshire Boat Museum Presents “Ice Yachting in the Lakes Region”
Local Ice Boat Sailor Shares the History of this Sport in the Lakes Region
July 1, 2009 – Wolfeboro, NH
The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro is pleased to welcome Charlie Silfvenius on Thursday, July 16 for a presentation at 7pm entitled “Ice Yachting in the Lakes Region.” This program about the fastest non-motorized vehicle in the world is free and open to the public.

The presenter, Charlie Silfvenius, a 22 year resident of Wolfeboro, has had a nearly lifelong fascination with ice boats that he builds, restores and sails on Lakes Winnipesaukee and Wentworth.

Guests will learn about several types of ice boats and local and national ice yachting organizations and will have the opportunity to meet some hardy and friendly individuals eager to share their love of this frigid sport. The presentation will also include a slide show of local iceboating events.

A science teacher at Henry Wilson Memorial School in Farmington, Mr. Silfvenius is also one of the volunteer instructors for the NH Boat Museum's Boat Building Program.

His first ice boat ride occurred when in 4th grade. His dad, who had been bitten by the bug after seeing well-known weatherman Don Kent sailing on TV, had built a homemade rig from plans in a Popular Mechanics magazine. As an adult, Charlie lived out west for a period of time and, upon returning to New Hampshire, wandered onto the ice at Wolfeboro Bay one March and stumbled upon a flood of childhood memories as he was greeted by the sight of 50 plus iceboats. The flame was rekindled and he was back on the ice again, continuing through today.

Tickets for the Boathouse Tour to be held on Thursday, August 13 are now available for sale at the Museum. Other upcoming events include the New England Vintage Boat Auction on July 18, Family Day on August 1, Alton Bay Boat Show on August 8, and the Wolfeboro Race Boat Regatta on September 18-19.

The New Hampshire Boat Museum is open Mon.-Sat. 10am-4pm, Sun. 12-4pm. Housed in the historic Allen A Resort's original dance hall, the Museum is located at 397 Center Street (Route 28/109), Wolfeboro Falls, two miles northeast of downtown Wolfeboro.
