Museum Hosts 3rd Annual Boathouse Tour
NEW HAMPSHIRE BOAT MUSEUM HOSTS 3RD ANNUAL BOATHOUSE TOUR
July 17, 2009 - Wolfeboro, NH.
The New Hampshire Boat Museum will host its third annual Boathouse Tour on Thursday, August 13 featuring six boathouses on Lake Winnipesaukee's shore. Tickets are now available for sale by contacting the Museum at 569-4554.

Guests will have the choice of traveling to the boathouses on land by car ($25 per person) or by water in a vintage wooden boat driven by a NHBM volunteer ($75 per person). Land tours run from 10am until 4pm; water tours will leave at 10:00am and 1:30pm from the landing at Saw Mill Marina, Bay Street, Wolfeboro, and last about three hours.

The boathouses on the tour are on the Lake Winnipesaukee shoreline from Wolfeboro to Alton Bay. Each boathouse will feature a vintage wooden boat, and docents will be on hand to discuss the boats and the boathouse history.

Boathouses that dot our shores have often held a certain mystery to those who cruise by them. Their utilitarian purpose was important to the early twentieth century cottagers. Families would spend the summer here and, with few roads, boats were their primary mode of transportation.

Today wooden boat owners covet the boathouse as a means to protect their vessels from constant exposure to the elements. In an effort to draw attention to this special genre' of architecture, some very generous owners are supporting the Museum with an invitation to take a peek inside their water garages.

All proceeds benefit the New Hampshire Boat Museum, a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization focusing on the boating history and heritage of New Hampshire's lakes and rivers. The Museum is located at 397 Center Street (Route 28N), Wolfeboro Falls, 2 miles northeast of downtown Wolfeboro. Hours are Mon.-Sat., 10am-4pm, and Sun. 12noon-4pm.
