After moving to Wolfeboro in 2000, the membership has grown to over 500 and the attendance to our seasonal Museum has steadily increased. We are well known for our mission related events and fund raisers - Antique Boat Auction, Alton Bay Boat Show, Boat House Tour, Biennial Vintage Raceboat Regatta, and now our Millie B antique ride boat. We operate on a balanced budget and end each year in the black. Museum Programs We are even better known for our outreach programs to benefit a wide spectrum of the area's diverse population. Our Community Sailing Program, a unique joint venture with the Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation Dept., has provided over 700 children the joys of sailing their own craft. The Museum supplies and maintains over 20 boats to support this program. We are probably best known for our Boat Building Program that has taught over 200 families, men, women, and youth the satisfaction of building and floating their own boat. To insure all youth are afforded this opportunity, generous service organizations and individuals have underwritten scholarships for over 80 youths ! Our Boat Restoration School is designed to engage interested men and women in the elements of wooden boat restoration. The Lakes Region Wolfeboro and the Lakes Region have been most supportive of our growth! Our very first Boat Auction funded the significant rehab needed to occupy our present home. Continued support from the business community as well as the Selectmen has allowed us to purchase our property and erect a substantial storage building. It is indeed a pleasure to be able to walk into virtually any business in town and receive very positive feedback about the Museum and its programs when we are soliciting support. The same level of support comes from all of the town's governmental agencies. The populous of Wolfeboro and the Lakes Region is a diverse mix of all ages numbering 5000 in the winter in Wolfeboro growing to over 16,000 in the summer. What is most unique is the depth of volunteerism in Wolfeboro. This beautiful, 4 season resort with activities for all has a continued influx of active retirees seeking to be involved in many different hobbies and projects. A full service community with modern hospital, library, schools, and churches ; it is two hours from Boston, one and a half hours from Portland, Maine and from a major airport in Manchester, NH. The Museum growth in programs and events is made possible by this steady influx of retirees who are willing volunteers. Our annual Volunteer Cook Out invitation list of volunteers and spouses exceeds 200. The area is blessed with an abundance of golf courses, tennis facilities, sailing and power boating, kayaking, hiking trails, downhill and cross country skiing, and more recreational activities. A very active Chamber of Commerce is adding to the growth of the area. Museum Capital Campaign The Museum is at a cross roads in its life with choices to continue to grow or to stabilize at our current level. The Trustees have chosen the path of continued growth. This has been influenced by the need to modernize our 1950's display hall and a need to build an endowment to reduce our dependency on continued fund raisers. We have engaged a Capital Campaign consultant, drafted a Statement of Need and conducted a Feasibility Study based on a staged expansion at our present site. The 50 interviewees gave us very valuable feed back. In summary, the major suggestions that came back dealt with a broader venue that should give consideration to more Lake History and possibly antique cars. It was noted the suggested major investment in our present non- water access site did not generate strong support. A greater presence on and with access to Lake Winnipesaukee would definitely command more interest with our Campaign. We are working on addressing and responding to all of the suggestions received from the interviewees. We are planning to launch the silent phase of the campaign in the summer of 2012. Collaboration is underway with the local yacht club to work together in support of their interests and programs as well as a provision for more Museum access to their waterfront. The Museum Trustee Board is searching for a new Director who has the capability and enthusiasm to help move the Museum forward to its next level! Hank Why Chair New Hampshire Boat Museum
